Backhoe Loaders: How Do They Work?

The Backhoe Loader’s Components
Cab: The cab at the top of the tractor contains the central controls for the whole machine. Some cabs are completely enclosed by safety glass, while others utilise an open canopy design to protect the operator. The chair inside the cab rotates completely to allow the operator to seamlessly switch between the front loader and the backhoe whenever necessary.
Tractor: The main structure of the loader machine, it is made up of the cab, the tyres and the engine. The tractor moves the backhoe around the site, and once in position, the operator will lock the tractor in place to use the front loader or the backhoe.
Front Loader: The front loader is responsible for moving heavy materials around and clearing space for other tasks at a construction site, whether it is soil, snow or debris. The large bucket is the front loader’s main component. Operators will occasionally use the front loader to smooth out surfaces as well.
Backhoe: The backhoe’s main function is to excavate or lift heavy materials. It is built up of three main components, which are the boom, the dipper arm and the bucket. To use the backhoe, the operator will first put the tractor in a fixed position using the tractor’s stabilising legs. Once the tractor is secure, the operator will then safely use the backhoe.
Boom: The boom is the long piece of the backhoe arm attached to the tractor. It lifts, lowers and swings left and right, depending on the direction the backhoe needs to point to work on a task.
Dipper Arm: The dipper arm, or dipstick, connects the boom with the bucket. It is joined with the boom at a pivot joint that allows it to move up or down to dig and shift materials efficiently. Its other primary function is to stabilise the weight of the materials inside the bucket.
Bucket: Attached to the end of the dipper arm, the bucket’s main purpose is to dig, scoop and shift heavy materials. The operator scoops materials by making the bucket horizontal and retracting the dipper arm, and drops materials by extending the dipper arm, turning the bucket upside down.
Operating Guidelines for Backhoe Loaders
Operators must follow all safety procedures and have a clear understanding of the front loader bucket and the backhoe’s controls. Additionally, inspect the machine to make sure it is suited to the task at hand.
The cab’s front facing controls comprise the steering wheel, a shifter, a front loader lever, the break and accelerator pedals, and other accessory controls for lights and horns, among other things. The back loader control setup comes in two types, either the three-stick system with foot controls to monitor the bucket’s swing, or a joystick system with two joysticks to manage the backhoe’s boom operations. To use the backhoe, operators should fully raise the tractor’s stabilising arms to secure the machine to the ground.
